Brief History

Hainan Airlines was founded in October 1989 as Hainan Province Airlines in Haikou, Hainan’s special economic zone, with support from the Chinese Land Economic Corporation and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). It restructured as China’s first joint-stock air-transport company in January 1993, launching scheduled services on May 2 with leased Boeing 737-300s. Early growth focused on domestic routes, becoming Hainan Airlines in 1995 and listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2000.

The 2000s marked aggressive expansion: Acquired 42 Boeing 787-8s (2005, 10 for Hainan), 10 Boeing 737-800s (2006), and 30 Boeing 787-9s (2015, deliveries through 2021). It pioneered China’s first 737-800 operation (1998) and joined codeshares for international reach. By 2010, it operated 97 aircraft, transporting 18.63 million passengers and 282,500 tons of cargo.

The 2010s saw global ambitions: First non-stop Beijing-Boston (2014), Manchester/Calgary (2016), and SKYTRAX 5-Star status (2011). Fleet modernized with A330s, 787s, and A350s; network grew to 51 international destinations. Challenges included HNA Group’s debt crisis, leading to creditor reorganization filings in January 2021 for Hainan and subsidiaries (e.g., Lucky Air, Urumqi Air).

The 2020s focused on recovery: Management transferred to Liaoning Fangda Group (December 2021); restructuring completed April 2022. Post-COVID rebound included 1,700+ routes in 2024, safety milestone (10 million hours, 2024), and orders for 100 COMAC aircraft (60 C919s, 40 ARJ21s; 2023–2032). By September 2025, it operates 227 aircraft, emphasizing Asia-Europe-North America links and sustainability, ranking as Asia’s 10th-largest by passengers carried.
