The German airline group is responding to rising demand for Arctic and Lapland destinations by introducing new routes and boosting frequencies to key spots in Finland and Norway.

New Direct Route: Munich to Rovaniemi – Home of Santa Claus

A major highlight is the launch of a brand-new direct service from Munich to Rovaniemi, Finland. Starting December 4, 2026, this route will link Lufthansa’s Munich hub to the capital of Lapland—famously known as the official “Home of Santa Claus.”

Flights will run twice weekly, on Fridays and Sundays. The outbound flight, LH2466, departs Munich at 11:30 a.m. local time and arrives in Rovaniemi at 3:45 p.m. The return flight, LH2467, leaves Rovaniemi at 4:40 p.m. and lands back in Munich at 6:55 p.m.

Lufthansa will operate these flights using the modern Airbus A320neo. This aircraft stands out for its excellent fuel efficiency, reduced noise levels, and lower emissions, supporting more sustainable travel to sensitive Arctic areas.

Rovaniemi’s appeal continues to grow. Located right on the Arctic Circle, it offers stunning natural wonders like the Northern Lights, vast snowy forests.

There are unique winter experiences such as reindeer safaris, husky sledding, ice fishing, and visits to Santa Claus Village. Families can cross the Arctic Circle marker and enjoy festive magic year-round.

Once mainly a winter spot, it now attracts visitors in summer for the midnight sun and outdoor adventures.

Alongside the new Munich-Rovaniemi link, Lufthansa is adding more capacity to existing high-demand services. The Frankfurt–Tromsø (Norway) and Munich–Tromsø routes will each gain two additional weekly flights.

Tromsø stands out as a major success since Lufthansa began serving it in 2016. It now benefits from up to 22 weekly connections from eight airports, making it one of the most accessible Arctic destinations.

Further seasonal boosts are scheduled for the peak winter period of February and March 2027. These include:

  • a third weekly flight on Frankfurt–Rovaniemi,
  • a second frequency for Frankfurt–Kuusamo (Finland), and
  • extra connections (second and third weekly) on Munich–Kittilä (Finland).

Kittilä provides easy access to prime Lapland winter sports areas.

Lufthansa Group’s Commitment to the Nordics

The Lufthansa Group’s focus on Nordic countries began in 2015 with its first flights to Kittilä, an exclusive winter sports gateway in Lapland.

Since then, the region has transformed into a sought-after year-round destination, drawing travellers for pristine nature, aurora hunting, authentic Arctic culture, and adventure activities.

Today, the broader Lufthansa Group, including Lufthansa plus partners like Austrian Airlines, Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines, operates up to 69 weekly flights to nine airports above the Arctic Circle. This extensive network highlights the surging popularity of Nordic travel among European passengers.

Conclusion

With these enhancements, Lufthansa makes dream winter getaways more convenient and accessible. The Nordic regional expansion answers increased regional travel demand for the winter season.

Whether its chasing the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi, exploring fjords in Tromsø, hitting the slopes in Kittilä, or discovering Lapland’s magic, more flight options mean easier planning for unforgettable trips to the Far North.
