Wizz Air is to close its base at Vienna International Airport, in a move that will see the airline cease all operations from the Austrian capital by March 2026. The decision, which follows a strategic review, is blamed on rising operational costs, taxes, and ground handling fees at the airport.
The closure will be phased, with the initial withdrawal of two aircraft and the suspension of routes to Bilbao and London Gatwick on October 26, 2025. The remaining three aircraft and the rest of the network’s routes will be phased out by March 15, 2026.
The airline stated that the rising costs in Vienna have made continued operations “incompatible” with its business model. Wizz Air had established its Vienna base in 2018 and operated 28 routes to 20 countries.
This decision comes as part of a broader network adjustment by Wizz Air, which includes the recent closure of its Abu Dhabi base. The carrier is shifting its focus to its core markets in Central and Eastern Europe, which it says generate the majority of its business.
The airline has also recently announced other route changes from the UK. Services from Liverpool and Glasgow to Budapest were discontinued in October, while new routes to destinations in Spain, Poland, and Romania have been added from London Luton and Birmingham.
Wizz Air says that it will continue to serve passengers in the region from its nearby bases in Bratislava and Budapest.
