New Delhi: An Air India flight from Delhi to Indore returned to the national capital shortly after take-off on August 31 following a fire alert in one of its engines, reported ANI, citing the airline as saying.

Flight AI2913, which was headed to Indore, received a fire indication for the right engine soon after departure. As per standard procedure, the cockpit crew shut down the engine and turned back to Delhi.

The airline said the crew initially issued a MAYDAY call, a distress signal indicating an emergency, but later downgraded it to PAN-PAN, which signals urgency but not immediate danger.

The flight landed safely at Delhi airport. “We confirm that the flight did not make an emergency landing at Delhi,” an Air India spokesperson said.
