Finnair has unveiled a new service for corporate customer designed to reduce their business travel carbon footprint by investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The service operates on a book-and-claim model, a system that separates the physical fuel delivery from the associated environmental claim. This means a company’s purchased SAF is not necessarily loaded onto the specific flight their employees are on. Instead, it is used in the airline’s overall operations where SAF supply is available, ensuring the environmental benefit is realized within the aviation system.
The achieved reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is verified by a third party, with the company receiving an audited SAF certificate for use in its sustainability reporting.
“We believe that the most effective solutions can be found at the system level and require cooperation not only between decision-makers and energy producers, but also between airlines and customers,” said Tuomo Karppinen, Finnair’s Head of Environment. “With the Finnair for Business SAF service, we want to accelerate the adoption of alternative aviation fuel made from renewable raw materials.”
