On Wednesday, 6 August 2025, Edelweiss officially named its second Airbus A350 “Piz Palü” at Zurich Airport. Like its predecessor, the first Airbus A350 named “Piz Bernina” in March, this state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft now carries the name of a majestic peak in the Engadin region.

Edelweiss traditionally names its aircraft after Swiss regions, towns, or mountains where the Edelweiss flower is native. This reflects the airline’s deep-rooted connection to Switzerland and gives each aircraft a symbolic link to a specific region where Edelweiss naturally grows.

David Birrer, Chief Operating Officer at Edelweiss, explains: “The Airbus A350 marks a new era for Edelweiss: it’s quieter, more efficient, and more comfortable. That our second A350 also bears the name of an Engadin Mountain is no coincidence – this region stands for natural beauty, strength, and vision like no other. Qualities that are embodied by our newest fleet member.”

The symbolic naming is not only appreciated by the airline but also by the region itself. Emilio Bianchi, Board Member of Corvatsch Diavolezza Lagalb, says: “We are proud that an Edelweiss aircraft once again carries the name of an Engadin peak. Piz Palü is a landmark of our region – knowing it will now travel the world on an aircraft brings our alpine homeland to the skies in a very special way.”

As a token of appreciation, Edelweiss received a picture of Piz Palü from the region, taken by renowned nature photographer Romano Salis. This special gift underlines the emotional significance of the name choice and the long-standing partnership.

The Airbus A350 “Piz Palü” operates on various long-haul routes – flying travellers to dream destinations while carrying a piece of the Engadin mountains across the globe. Its name evokes the strength, serenity, and beauty of the Alps – and inspires wanderlust the moment, passengers board.
