A British Airways flight has made an emergency landing after reports of smoke in the cabin. Fire crews and ambulances rushed to the tarmac as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner touched down at Sydney Airport at around 4pm local time.
Photos from the scene show the emergency response in action as authorities dealt with the incident. The plane was seen taxiing back to the gate following the emergency landing.
The Singapore-bound flight departed Sydney at around 2.40pm local time but had to turn around after smoke was reported in the cabin, plunging the airport into chaos. It landed at around 3.56pm back at Sydney Airport, data from flight tracking website flight aware shows.
The cause of the reported smoke in the cabin has not yet been confirmed, and it remains unclear how many passengers were on board the flight.
A Sydney Airport spokesperson told Australian outlet 7 News: “British Airways flight BA16 from Sydney to Singapore made an emergency return to Sydney Airport approximately an hour after take-off.
“The aircraft arrived safely and was met by emergency services as part of standard procedures. All passengers have since disembarked safely, and there has been no impact to airport operations.”
Air services Australia Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service crews responded to the landing, and confirmed the plane landed safely and has cleared the runway.
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft took off on time. But it was diverted when it reached New South Wales’ central west just 60 minutes into the eight-hour flight.
The Dreamliner, which has the capacity to carry between 250 and 500 passengers, returned to Sydney and landed safely after circling. before being given the all-clear.
Audio of the mayday call between the pilot and the Sydney Airport operations control center has since been released, 9news in Australia reported.
