Vietnam Airlines will suspend seven domestic routes from April 1 to conserve jet fuel, prioritising critical national links as imports are disrupted.
HANOI: Vietnam Airlines will cancel 23 flights per week across several domestic routes from next month due to a looming jet fuel shortage. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) announced the planned cuts in a statement issued late on Monday.
The flag carrier is prioritising routes deemed critical to national connectivity, trade, tourism, diplomacy and domestic travel. From April 1, it will suspend seven domestic routes to conserve fuel.
The affected services include flights from Hai Phong to Buon Ma Thuot, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc and Can Tho. Routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Van Don, Rach Gia and Dien Bien will also be suspended.
The majority of Vietnam’s jet fuel demand is met by imports. The CAAV has previously warned that supply is being disrupted, with China and Thailand halting exports due to the war in the Middle East.
Vietnamese airlines are also preparing to implement fuel surcharges on international routes from early April. Vietnam Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
