Southwest Airlines has announced a landmark partnership with T-Mobile that will deliver free, unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi to all members of its Rapid Rewards program. This is expected to take effect on October 24, 2025, and will be rolled out across Southwest’s fleet of over 800 aircraft, which the carrier advertises will make it the largest carrier to fully offer free wifi in the United States.

This initiative follows a recent internal trial of free Wi-Fi for Rapid Rewards members that received high satisfaction ratings. No matter how it’s being used, passengers will not be charged for the use of the wifi, provided that they are a Rapid Rewards member. This comes as Southwest executives attempt to elevate Southwest’s onboard experience.

Free Wi-Fi For Southwest Rapid Rewards Passengers

Starting October 24, all Rapid Rewards members will be able to connect to free Wi-Fi for the full duration of their flight. While this comes as part of a partnership between the Dallas-based carrier and T-Mobile, passengers can access it regardless of their wireless carrier. As it currently stands, Southwest charges $8 for Wi-Fi.

The partnership with T-Mobile builds on the wireless network operator’s long-standing commitment to in-flight connectivity. T-Mobile customers have enjoyed free, limited Wi-Fi on numerous US airlines for years, but T-Mobile is now expanding this network to non-T-Mobile customers flying with Southwest Airlines.

With the rollout scheduled across a massive fleet of over 800 aircraft, Southwest is providing broad access to high-speed internet. For passengers, it means seamless ability to stream, browse, or stay connected throughout domestic travel, elevating expectations for in-flight technology among U.S. airlines.

Southwest Is Improving Its Competitive Position

Southwest Airlines is not the same carrier that it was in the past. Passengers today are moving towards legacy airlines that provide more perks with more premium seating options and larger international networks. This has led to Southwest losing market share and profits, prompting Elliott Investment to swoop in and make thorough changes to boost short-term profits.

Over the past year, Southwest has made countless changes to its in-flight experience and business model. Some of these have been met with skepticism and controversy, such as ending open seating or adding surcharges for checked bags. However, many of Southwest’s operational adjustments have been a net positive, and initiatives to move the carrier upmarket, such as adding premium seating options, have undeniably moved the carrier closer to the demands of the market.

The introduction of free Wi-Fi is certainly a net positive for Southwest. Onboard Wi-Fi is increasingly becoming a necessity for passengers, and this benefit distinguishes Southwest from other low-cost competitors, positioning it more in line with legacy carriers. Furthermore, this benefits Rapid Rewards, again positioning the airline’s loyalty program closer to full-service carriers.
