Brief History & Key Milestones

Here is a timeline of Airnorth’s development, highlighting major events, expansions, and changes:

Year / PeriodWhat Happened
1978Airnorth was established, began operations on 4 July 1978 as a charter airline in Darwin, flying small aircraft (Cessna etc.) around the Northern Territory.
Early 1980sIn 1981, Airnorth introduced its first turbine‑engine aircraft (Beechcraft Super King Air 200), and began offering Scheduled Public Transport (RPT) services, moving beyond purely charter flights.
1980s–1990sExpanded fleet: introduced Douglas DC‑3, Fairchild Metro 23, Embraer EMB‑120 Brasilia turboprops. Developed scheduled services to a range of regional and remote destinations in the Northern Territory and nearby regions.
1999‑2000Began charters from Darwin to Dili (Timor‑Leste) under UN contract, later turned into scheduled international services.
2007Introduced the Embraer E‑170 jet – the first jet in its fleet. This allowed faster, higher‑capacity service and opened up interstate / more distant routes.
2012–2016Further expansion of interstate / international routes. For example, Darwin → Townsville service, expansion into Queensland and Victoria via Wellcamp Airport near Toowoomba, addition of flights to Melbourne & Cairns. Also increases in fleet.
2015Bristow Helicopters Australia acquired 85% controlling interest in Airnorth, later full ownership.
2022Added two Embraer E190 aircraft to the fleet to enhance capacity, range, and efficiency.
2023‑2024New route developments: non‑stop service between Alice Springs and Perth launched in March 2024. Also, service between Alice Springs and Cairns started in April 2025.

Significance & Positioning

  • Airnorth is often cited as Australia’s second‑oldest airline (after Qantas) still operating under its original core identity in regional services.
  • It has developed a reputation for operating in remote / challenging environments — rugged remote airstrips, weather variability, etc.
  • Balance of services: both scheduled (public) transport and charter/contract services. This mix helps sustain routes that may not be commercially viable but are socially or economically essential.

Today marks a milestone for Alice Springs and Far North Queensland as Airnorth’s inaugural direct flight between Alice Springs and Cairns becomes a reality, opening up exciting opportunities for tourism, business, and investment.

The new service, operating three times per week, is touching down in Alice Springs this afternoon.  This service strengthens links between two of Australia’s most iconic regions, offering more than 30,000 seats annually and enhancing domestic and international itineraries.

Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill welcomed today’s inaugural flight and highlighted its economic and tourism potential.

“This new service is a game-changer for Central Australia, providing greater access for visitors, businesses, and investors. Improved air connectivity is key to unlocking opportunities across tourism, trade, and regional development,” said Minister Cahill.

“This route will attract more visitors to the Northern Territory while also supporting business and industry growth. It’s a fantastic outcome for both regions.”

Tourism Central Australia Chair, Patrick Bedford said:

“On behalf of the tourism operators of Central Australia, we welcome the new Airnorth connection between Alice Springs and Cairns.

“Improved air access is critical to the success of our region, and this new route will provide greater opportunities to attract visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen the tourism economy across the Red Centre.

“We thank Airnorth and the Northern Territory Government for their commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.”

Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said the airline is proud to expand its network with this important new connection.

“The Alice Springs–Cairns route strengthens Australia’s regional network, linking two dynamic destinations that offer unique tourism experiences and business opportunities,” said Mr Bowden.

“We’re thrilled to provide greater accessibility and choice for travellers.”

Airport Development Group Executive General Manager Airports Rob Porter acknowledged the collaborative effort behind this inaugural flight.

“This new service is a testament to the strong partnerships between Airnorth, the Northern Territory Government, and Airport Development Group,” said Mr Porter.

“It demonstrates our shared commitment to expanding air connectivity and driving economic benefits for Alice Springs and the wider Territory.”

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said Airnorth’s new service would entice more visitors to both Cairns and Alice Springs and encourage longer stays in each region.

“Each destination offers unique attractions and rich cultural experiences, so tourists are usually keen to visit both regions while they’re here,” said Mr Barker.

“This new, direct service will streamline their journey and prevent additional stops in capital city airports, which means more time for exploring the beauty of Tropical North Queensland and Alice Springs.”
