Europe’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially begin operations on 12 October 2025, marking a major shift in how travellers from non-EU countries enter and leave the Schengen Area. The system, designed to enhance border security and streamline passport checks, will be gradually introduced at airports and other external borders across participating European countries.

The EES replaces the traditional passport stamping process with automated registration of biometric and travel data. Upon their first entry, non-EU visitors will have their facial image and fingerprints recorded, along with details of their passport and entry date. Subsequent crossings will be verified automatically through biometric checks, aiming to reduce waiting times and prevent overstays.

For air passengers, the rollout means a new pre-boarding and arrival process. Airlines and airports are preparing dedicated EES kiosks and e-gates where travellers will complete registration before passport control. While the system is expected to speed up border procedures in the long term, authorities warn of possible delays during the initial months as passengers and staff adapt to the new requirements.

The EES applies to all non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). EU citizens and holders of residence permits are exempt.

Airports, airlines, and border agencies across Europe are coordinating communication campaigns to inform travellers ahead of time and minimize disruption when the system goes live.
