Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines announced the purchase of six 787 Dreamliner jets as the airline fully exercises commitments from its 2023 order. Ethiopian Airlines will use the 787-9 jets to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa and increase cargo capacity as demand for long-haul travel continues to rise.

“Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew. “The order shows Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements. By growing our fleet size with ultra-modern airplanes such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are further maintaining operational excellence and passengers’ comfort.”

Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, flying its 787-8 and 787-9 jets on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to high-demand destinations across Europe, Asia and North America as well as key intra-African routes spanning the world’s second-largest continent.

“We’re proud that Ethiopian Airlines continues to look to the 787 Dreamliner to serve as the backbone of their fleet as they grow and modernize their operations, open new routes and comfortably serve more passengers,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa.

The 787 Dreamliner’s versatility and reduced fuel use enable Ethiopian Airlines to efficiently transport passengers point-to-point across Africa while accommodating cargo in the belly of the airplane for high-demand trade lanes.

LATAM Airlines Group has signed an agreement with Embraer for up to 74 E195-E2 aircraft, comprising 24 firm orders and 50 purchase options, valued at roughly US$2.1 billion at list prices. Deliveries of the firm aircraft will begin in the second half of 2026, starting with LATAM Airlines Brazil and potentially extending to other affiliates.

The investment will allow LATAM to strengthen regional connectivity by potentially adding up to 35 new destinations to its current network of 160, while improving flexibility at its hubs. The move aligns with LATAM’s financial policy and ongoing strategy of profitable growth, which has expanded its passenger network by 24% since 2021.

The Embraer E195-E2, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and featuring advanced fly-by-wire technology, offers up to 30% lower fuel consumption per seat compared to older models, along with a more comfortable 2-2 seating configuration. The jets will complement LATAM’s existing fleet of 362 aircraft, which includes Airbus narrow-bodies, Boeing wide-bodies, and freighters.

LATAM CEO Roberto Alvo said the order reflects the group’s focus on expanding domestic and regional operations, enhancing connectivity, and supporting economic and social development across South America. Embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto added that the partnership highlights LATAM’s commitment to efficiency and growth, with the E195-E2 offering the “right capacity” for the region’s needs.
