The latest data from China Trading Desk outlines the habits of China’s travelers, from short booking windows to comparing retail prices online

The Chinese traveler market is beginning to stabilize, with a focus on short booking windows, repeat travel, and the majority intending to shop in the airport, according to the latest insights from China Trading Desk.

The company’s China Outbound Travel Sentiment Survey, Q3 2025, shows that more than three quarters of outbound travellers (78%) still book less than a month out. However, with 73% expecting one or two trips per year, and the number of first-time outbound travellers falling from 44% last quarter to 39% this quarter, it appears that confidence is high among repeat travellers.

Those travelers are also planning to shop, according to the figures, which show that 60% plan to spend during dwell time at the airport, while more than a quarter more (28%) are undecided. Digital is a key engagement point, with 98% of Chinese travelling shoppers comparing prices online and 64% saying promotionsor Douyin (Little Red Book or TikTok) increase the likelihood they will shop.

Staff remain a key factor as well, with 76% of respondents saying they value staff assistance.

According to China Trading Desk, the data outlines the need for brands to combine discoverability with strong pricing, while creating pre-trip engagement online.

“The cadence has compressed, but intent is durable,” said Subramania Bhatt, CEO & Founder, China Trading Desk. “Chinese travellers are planning earlier in feeds and apps and converting late at checkout. Winning brands show up in discovery with proof and utility — then make purchase effortless when the window opens.

“In travel retail, the battleground is clarity: findability, transparent pricing, and human service that removes friction.”

Elsewhere, “value-led premium” leads the way in travel preference for Chinese travellers, with 69% seeking four-star hotels, while price (22%) and location (20%) are key considerations.

Interest in travel to Europe is rising, with Mainland Europe accounting for 10% of travel, and the UK a further 5%.

Air Mauritius introduces dedicated policies for bereaved families and cancer patients

Since 05 August 2025, Air Mauritius has introduced two policies dedicated to supporting its passengers through difficult moments:

1) A bereavement policy allowing for refunds, rebooking, and special baggage handling in the event of the death of an Air Mauritius passenger or a member of his/her immediate family.

2) For passengers with cancer, a procedure for changing travel dates, offering them flexibility when they need to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Eligibility for the bereavement policy applies to: (1) the demise of the passenger before or during the trip, (2) the trip of a close relative before or after the demise, or (3) the demise of an immediate family member requiring the cancellation or modification of the ticket.

This bereavement policy includes many benefits, such as a refund without penalty, even if the ticket was originally non-refundable. Free rebooking or exchange of the ticket for another destination is also possible. No additional fees will be charged for travel in the same cabin. In addition, the accompanying passenger will be entitled to carry the deceased person’s hand luggage and checked baggage free of charge.

To take advantage of these facilities, bereaved relatives must present a death certificate and proof of family relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate, or any other legal document). Immediate family members include spouse, common-law partner, parents (biological or step), children, grandchildren, siblings, grandparents, or legal guardian.

Requests should be made at Air Mauritius counters or offices abroad, as well as at Travel agencies that have already been notified of these new measures.

Assistance for cancer patients

This measure aims to ease the logistical constraints on patients and their families in these difficult circumstances.

Cases will be considered upon presentation of a medical certificate stating the cancer diagnosis and indicating the medical necessity of changing the travel date. Passengers who need to travel abroad for cancer treatment may then request a change of travel date, subject to certain conditions. Ticket refunds will be made in accordance with the original fare rules.

Revalidation is authorised in any booking class available in the same cabin for the patient and any accompanying person travelling under the same booking reference (PNR). These passengers will not be subject to any fare adjustment, regardless of the initial fare or booking class. The baggage allowance will apply according to the initial fare conditions of the ticket.
