Brief HistoryUnited Airlines traces its roots to 1926, when Varney Air Lines, founded by William Boeing, began as a mail carrier. By 1931, Boeing’s acquisitions of Varney, Pacific Air Transport, National Air Transport, and Boeing Air Transport formed United Air Lines under United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UATC). The Air Mail Act of 1934 forced UATC’s dissolution, making United an independent airline under William A. Patterson’s leadership.

Key milestones include:1930s: Introduced the Boeing 247, enabling non-stop transcontinental flights, and hired the first flight attendants, led by Ellen Church.

World War II: Supported the war effort by transporting personnel and materials.

1961: Merged with Capital Airlines, briefly becoming the world’s second-largest airline.

1970s-80s: Championed airline deregulation and acquired Pan Am’s Pacific (1986), London (1990), and Latin American routes (1991).

1994: Became employee-owned through a $4.9 billion buyout.

1997: Co-founded Star Alliance.

2001: Faced tragedy with two aircraft lost in the September 11 attacks.

2002-2006: Filed for bankruptcy, emerging after restructuring.

2010-2012: Merged with Continental Airlines, adopting its globe logo, with the parent company renamed United Airlines Holdings in 2019.

Today, United continues to innovate, with plans for supersonic travel and fleet expansions, including orders for Boeing 787s and Airbus A321XLRs.
