London, Jan 15 — Several European airlines are continuing to steer clear of Iranian and Iraqi airspace, even after authorities briefly reopened the skies, as concerns persist over regional security and geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

Flight tracking data shows carriers such as Lufthansa, Wizz Air, and British Airways rerouting flights away from Iran and Iraq, opting instead for longer paths over Central Asia and Afghanistan. The detours are aimed at reducing operational and safety risks linked to ongoing political tensions.

Iran temporarily closed its airspace for several hours earlier this week amid fears of potential military escalation, forcing airlines to cancel, delay, or divert flights. Although the airspace has since reopened, many carriers remain cautious, choosing not to resume normal routings.

Aviation security experts warn that the situation remains unpredictable, with the possibility of sudden airspace closures and further disruptions. Airlines are being advised to closely monitor developments and limit exposure to high-risk regions.

The shift in flight paths reflects a broader trend seen over the past two years, during which many Western airlines have altered Middle East routings to avoid conflict zones, even if it results in longer flight times and higher fuel costs.

Some governments have also taken precautionary steps. Germany recently issued guidance discouraging its airlines from entering Iranian airspace, while several European carriers have adjusted operations accordingly. Low-cost airline Wizz Air confirmed that some westbound flights from the Gulf may require technical stops for refueling or crew changes due to the rerouting.

Other airlines, including KLM and Finnair, said they are avoiding Iranian and Iraqi airspace as a precaution, with Finnair rerouting Middle East services via Saudi Arabia. British Airways has also suspended selected regional services as part of its risk management measures.

While domestic flights within Iran continue to operate, international carriers remain wary. Industry observers say airlines are likely to maintain alternative routings until the regional security outlook becomes more stable.
