United Airlines has resumed nonstop flights between Glasgow Airport and the New York area (with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft), restoring a direct transatlantic connection that had been absent since 2019.
The new daily seasonal service operates between Glasgow and Newark Liberty International Airport, United’s main hub for the New York metropolitan region. The inaugural flight arrived in Glasgow on Saturday, marking the airline’s return to the airport after a seven-year break in service.
United is currently the only US airline offering nonstop flights between Glasgow and the United States. The carrier said it will operate up to four daily nonstop US services from Scotland during the 2026 summer season, including existing routes from Edinburgh to Newark, Washington DC and Chicago O’Hare.
Karolien De Hertogh said the restored route reflects United’s long-term commitment to Scotland and strengthens connections between Scotland and more than 220 destinations across the Americas through Newark.
AGS Airports described the return of the route as a major boost for connectivity, tourism and trade. Airport executives highlighted strong previous demand for the service, including passenger traffic and cargo exports such as whisky and seafood.
The relaunch also forms part of Glasgow Airport’s wider £350 million investment programme aimed at improving passenger experience and expanding international connectivity.
